Raised in New York City, Tony Bennett began singing at an early age and by age 10 he had already performed at the opening of the Triborough Bridge. He also fought in the final stages of World War II as an infantryman with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. Afterwards, he developed his singing technique and signed with Colombia Records. His first number one popular song was "Because Of You" and was released in 1951. He recorded his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," in 1962. Bennett staged a remarkable comeback in the late 1980s after a downturn during the height of rock era, putting out gold record albums again and expanding his audience.
