Les Misérables is a French novel written by author Victor Hugo in 1862 and is widely considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century. The name is translated variously as The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor or The Victims. The story focuses on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption. It examines the nature of law and grace, the history of France, the architecture of Paris, politics, religion and love.
